I'm dedicating this entire posting to the one troublesome topic of the Canadian oil pipeline that Ed Schultz is so insistent in talking about. He says "I'm not going to engage in petty bickering over it but I am going to discuss it". Almost the next thing he does is calls this one "Tweet" by an environmentalist "stupid" because he said that tar oil and normal oil can't be mixed in the same pipeline. OK he got one fact wrong- - but for Ed to jump all over this- - only shows how desperate Ed Schultz is to show ONE person he's smarter than. Ed accused environmentalists of saying "If you're not with us on this issue it proves you are no Liberal". Let me talk about myself a little. As you know I am against Roe vs Wade and gay marriage. And yet I have said "I will not refuse to support a Democratic candidate running for Congress on the basis of their stance on these two issues". The answer is simple. Abortion has been LEGAL for forty years. That ship has sailed. Gay Marriage is now approaching the state of universal acceptance. The thing is how do these two issues affect ME personally. If I don't WANT an abortion then I won't have one. If I am against gay's marrying then I won't marry a gay. But for instance if my drinking water is poisoned, I can't just decide "Well that settles it; I'm just not going to drink water". Or if I own ocean front property I can't just decide "Well if the ocean rises ten or fifteen feet or there's more hurricanes, I"ll just move to some place that's safer, like maybe to Barstow". It's like smoking vs drinking. Nobody is going to smoke a couple cigarettes and then get in their car and go get in a wreck. We only have one Planet Earth. If the carbon footprint goes way above 350 parts per million - - then "stuff" is going to start happening.
Not to call Ed stupid or anything - - but boy is Ed stupid when he says "I don't wan to get in another war in the middle east to keep oil supply lines secure". If this were Germany in the last century- - this might be a conversation worth having. You can argue till the cows come home 'Maybe Hitler shouldn't be expanding into the Ukrane just to secure German oil supply lines". But flash for you Ed, this isn't Germany in the 1930s. But let's get down to brass tacks. Oil in 2002 was twenty five dollars a barrel. Today oil is a hundred dollars a barrel after fighting in Iraq over eight years to "secure the oil" as Ed puts it. I looked up those price figures in wolframalpha. com. They had them. Then they had an oil executive on. He admits there is no way of stopping the pipeline - - probably. However this pipeline uses inferior grade steel from India. The least we could do is to use domestically produced Steel, but we aren't. This pipeline has been tested to be safe up to 1900 PSI or something. However it's necessary to squeeze the oil to 2200 PSI to get this sticky oil through the XL pipeline. Keep in mind there are abrasive elements in this oil like sandpaper that will wear at the steel fittings and joints. But also they put "secret ingrediants" in the oil to make it more soluable or whatever- - and these mystery ingrediants are a Trade Secret and they won't tell the HASMAT people what they are so they can clean it up in case of a oil spill. Also a caller yesterday had made the point that this environmental study by John Kerry was bogus and relied on Industry hype- - when you could Google the information yourself to dissern whether the transport was safe. Ed cut the caller off and said something about "liberal talking points". But the majority of progressives are on my side on this matter and have been out protesting. Keep in mind when Ed asserts "Montana oil WILL be shipped through this pipeline because they NEED it". Of course the Montanna people say they DON"T need the pipeline, and that's when Ed said "Oh, that guy is obviously in the back pocket of Burlington Northern". The Koch Brothers will profit to the tune of one hundred Billion with a B - - dollars. Ed just asked a caller this. The caller would not refute this statement. The caller was given a chance to refute this Koch Brother charged, and he DIDN'T. Capish? All he could say is "Well - - people besides the Koch Brothers will make money from this". That didn't answer the question about the hundred Billion with a B - - dollars. But finally allow me to address a statement Ed said a couple of days ago. He said "I know for a fact that this oil will have a Neglegable (code word for "put the thing out of your mind) effect on the CO2 foot print. This is what Ed said. Now assuming that the Oil Sands are NO MORE toxic than ordenary oil but are of equal hazard- - then it must Logically be concluded that "Canadian oil will have no appreciable effect upon our oil security". If the First statement is true- - then the Second statement, by logical extension Has to be true. What are you going to do about that Ed? I don't like trashing Ed. If he would just get off of this oil issue that's pointless to Pursue- - we'd get along fine, and Ed is valuable in furthering discussion on this and on so many other issues, where Ed's input has been valuable.
